Pyd Design Market gets festive!!

Tell us a little bit about the pyd design market?
pyd design market is an annual event which runs the last weekend of October (the Sunday runs alongside the Danks Street Festival although we are run independently of that festival)

When/why did you start the market?
We started the Market in 2008 because we wanted to create a platform for Australia’s best object designers to showcase their collections to the wider public all under the one space. Our location meant that we could instantly offer a powerful sales platform for these designers with the Danks Street Festival running literrally alongside of pyd. Last year we saw over 20,000 consumers pass through the markets on the one day. That’s why this year we wanted to make this a two day event starting on the Saturday; to give the public an opportunity to ‘beat the crowds’ on the Sunday. Pyd Design Market is different to other markets in that we are not about fashion, our focus is on high-end, handmade, Australian Object design pieces. We focus on furniture, lighting, homewares, and object design.

What is the favourite part about running the market?
Certainly through the call to entry process we discover many talented emerging designers, some of them exceptional, and being able to offer them an opportunity to make their mark in the industry is something we feel quite excited about.

Why do you love handmade so much?
There is something quite special about finding something that is handmade. The craftsmanship and skill it takes to create a piece of furniture or an object design piece gives the piece value you cant find in something that is mass-produced – more often than not, it really is a labour of love. A little piece of the designer’s personality spills into each and every piece they make and these are the things that become heirlooms that are treasured forever. No two pieces are every the same.

Name 5 reason why your visitors should attend the pyd design market?
• Over 80 Australian Object designers including Trent Jansen, Andrew Simpson, Workshopped, Design By Them and Ute Australia Design
• To discover a design treasure for your home, your friends, or family.
• A one-stop-design shop for all your Christmas pressie gift ideas (but come on the Saturday to beat the Danks Street Festival crush!)
• You only get to see this line up of designers under the same roof once a year!
• Because you are a design aficionado!
