Unkindness and cruelty

madeit new seller :: Two Goats

madeit new seller :: Two Goats

How did you find about madeit?
This year at an Australia day house warming party, we were catching up with old friends that we hadn't seen in ages. They are part of AlmondTreeDesigns and I mentioned my new venture, instantly they filled me in on how helpful a site like this could be for me. Gotta love friends!

Explain your style
My personalised children's art comes in a few colour ranges, I carry the same colour ranges through all of the designs so mums and dads can mix and match various canvases. It's kind of a fun preppy modern style.

What makes you happy?
I'm happiest when I really knuckle down and get involved in a design. I like to try and cover everything, all of my canvas backings are edged with the Two Goats logo and I really have a ball trying to find names that match the canvases I design.

What makes you sad?
Not enough hours in the day! Lovely young family, new business, endurance training and a passionate gardener...sometimes it's hard to find the balance.

What can't you live without?
Exercise. I'm currently training to do my first half ironman this May. So at the moment "Swim. Bike. Run." is my mantra.

madeit new seller :: Ivy and Lil

madeit new seller :: Ivy and Lil

How did you find about madeit?
A friend (Velvey and Me) who is a maker and is listed on Madeit recommended the site to me after being at a craft market together.

Explain your style
My style is a little bit industrial, as my designs are inspired by road and works signs.  These bold images in bright, fun colours look great on natural, earthy linen fabrics.

What makes you happy?
Heading down to the studio in the morning with a cuppa in hand ready for a day of printing.  Pablo (the whippet) my studio assistant is usually about 2 steps behind me!

What makes you sad?
Never having enough time to bring to life all the ideas in my head!

What can't you live without?
The support and good humour of my husband, always on hand with a smile and something encouraging to say.

How did you find about madeit?
Since I have started sewing, the people I make things for have gotten alot of comments on their handmade items and people have said I should sell them. I had never really thought about it and asked a friend who sews if she knew a good place to sell handmade items and she suggested madeit.com.au, so I figured I'd give it a try

Explain your style
Bright! Happy! Fun! I try to let that reflect on the things I create.

What makes you happy?
I love bright colours, reading crafty blogs and shopping for fabric definitely makes me happy!

What makes you sad?
Rainy days and seeing other people sad.

What can't you live without?
Family, friends and my sewing machine!!

madeit new seller :: ethel and dot

How did you find out about madeit?
I regularly look at a number of blogs as I love to see what other people are making both for themselves and in their businesses and for inspiration with my own sewing.  I also love looking at blogs to keep up with what fabric ranges are currently being designed.  It was through this blog surfing that I first heard about Madeit.

Explain your style.
I love fabric that is fresh, modern and full of beautiful colours.  At the moment, I am particularly enjoying using fabric covered buttons to create simple small items that are practical-  whether it be magnets, hair accessories, wall art or bibs.  In addition to this, I love the challenge of how to best show off the colours, patterns and pictures on the fabric for such small items.

What makes you happy?
I would most definitely have to say my little girl who is 10 months old.  She brings such joy to my husband and I.  I often catch myself during the day just watching and smiling as she explores the world, tries to figure out the whole walking thing, looks inquisitively through books and rolls around on the floor laughing- the list could go on.  It is just amazing to watch her grow and develop, so much has happened and it has only been 10 months!

What makes you sad?
I am hopeless when it comes to watching sad movies.  I even cry when it is a sort of happy moment but still sad- like in Toy Story 3 (I won't give away what happens, but those of you who have seen it will know what I mean), boy did I cry!

What can't you live without?
My Husband and daughter would have to be at the top of my list.  Having said that, I also could not live without my family as I am very close to my Mum and twin sister. With my sister it is like having a permanent best friend.  Oh, and I had better not forget my dog, Stanley.

How did you find about madeit?
I was introduced to madeit by a friend earlier this year. She suggested I check out the site! I was really pleased to know there was a site that was all Australian! When I visited I immediately decided I would work towards putting my illustrations onto madeit

Explain your style
My style is definitely something that I have put a lot of thought into! I would call it a little bit shabby chic, a little bit retro. I use water colours and ink to create my illustrations, once they are drawn and painted I use vintage fabric, usually bed sheets which I free motion sew to complete the design. My themes are influenced by my love of family mixed with my love of vintage.

What makes you happy?
I have simple tastes. I am made happy by fun times spent with family, walking along the beach and watching my girls jump in the waves in their clothes, and time to create!

What makes you sad?
I can be overwhelmed at times of the busyness that creeps into our lives. I prefer things to go at a slower pace.

What can't you live without?
hmmm so many special things in my life but I would have to say my faith, my family, time with friends and box of watercolours

Swirly and decorative with a touch of whimsy.

A clean house and a happy and healthy family. Time to sit on the lounge and draw. A phone call from my Mum and Dad.

What makes you sad?
Rude people, paying bills and when my kids are upset

How did you find about madeit?

I was recommended to madeit by a lovely creative friend of mine who makes mosaic pendants.

Explain your style
My style is inspired by the colour and design of the Mid Century Modern Period. I love interiors and furniture and have been enjoying collage as it combines upcycling old magazines and it keeps my creative outlet satisfied in a small space.

What makes you happy?
Seeing my daughter Ruby up to her elbows in paint and paper.

What makes you sad?
Indulgent people.

What can't you live without?
I absolutely cannot live without good food, family and friends.

madeit new seller quick five :: Began In The Ground

madeit new seller quick five :: Began In The Ground
www.madeit.com.au/BeganInTheGround

How did you find about madeit?
A fellow artist was asking me if I've thought of selling on the international site, and she also said there was an Australian site called madeit, so i decided to look it up. I liked the idea of sticking with the Australian's!

Explain your style
Pretty random, although i would say that i am heavily influenced by strong shapes and forms. i love to manipulate maps and aerial photography, taking out parts of those images, enlarging or shrinking them, and drawing over them to begin my designing. You can see this in my rock ring series.

What makes you happy?
My beautiful husband

What makes you sad?
People not valuing their artwork and what they produce and therefore selling it too cheap.

What can't you live without?
Making of somekind.

madeit new seller quick five :: Belinda Morris

madeit new seller quick five :: Belinda Morris
www.madeit.com.au/BelindaMorris

How did you find about madeit?

I have been researching the online handmade scene for a little while now - looking at lots of other designers, magazines and market goers to get a feel for which site I should list on. Lots of helpful souls told me that Madeit was the way to go... so here I am.

Explain your style
I definitely love a bit of a vintage feel. All that style, glamour and playfulness of bygone eras is really appealing to me. I love cloths and accessories that are soft and feminine, but with a twist. I like my cloths to be a bit of a personal expression and not the standard off the rack look and love a handbag that makes a statement all on its own.

What makes you happy?
So many things..it is hard to pick out the best ones, but definitely watching my children when they are happily engrossed in an imaginary world or wrestling with my partner, creating a new piece and bringing it out for the final viewing, cups of coffee with my girlfriends, being at the beach, a great breakfast at a great cafe with great friends, trivia at the local pub, playing basketball etc, etc, etc

What makes you sad?
That human beings can be so lacking in compassion that they do not realise what they are doing to hurt other human beings and the inequality that exists in the world and that human beings can be so ignorant they do not realise what destruction we are wreaking on our planet.

What can't you live without?
Definitely coffee first thing in the morning, my family, my Mum and trying my hardest to be creative.

madeit new seller quick five :: Willow Tree Cards

madeit new seller quick five :: Willow Tree Cards
madeit.com.au/WillowTreeCards

How did you find about madeit?

From it's American equivalent. I thought, Australia must have something like this - so I googled and here we are!

Explain your style
I love natural shapes, lines and fabrics. Hand drawn, simple items with an element of quirkiness. I also really love things that are inspired by nature. I'm not a fan of "fussy" styles that are heavily floral or embellished.

What makes you happy?
Hearing my 2 year old sing the "Play School" song over the baby monitor and watching her (messily) explore her own creativity. That feeling when you drive out of your driveway about to go somewhere that you've been looking forward to going. When bedtime has arrived and you can start creating without an insistent hand tugging at your arm and when you come home from somewhere fun to find your darling husband has done the housework!

What makes you sad?
Children whose parents have the means to look after them properly and decide not to. Children whose parents can't look after them properly because they don't have the mental or physical means and children who lose their families in tragedy. I feel that children should be cherished, nourished and taught how to be independent and secure in themselves - that starts at home.

What can't you live without?
Time. Time to play with my daughter, Willow. Time to be with my husband by ourselves, time to make memories as a family and time to be creative on my own. Also, good coffee!

madeit new seller quick five :: Piggledee

How did you find out about madeit?

I was reading an article in a local newspaper about an immigrant woman who taught crafting in Australia (being an immigrant myself, I'm a sucker for these stories), and there was a link to her madeit shop at the end of the article. I didn't look it up at the time, but it stuck in my mind. Later when I started my own business selling handmade children's items, I remembered that link -- I was immediately taken by such a vibrant crafting community here in Australia!

Explain your style
My aesthetic is minimalist, understated, and functional – I'm from Japan, and am very much influenced by my culture. Especially when it comes to children, who are gorgeous just being themselves, I believe simple designs and soft, earthy colours are best to enhance their natural cuteness. Also, everything I make for my shop is highly functional – useful things I find invaluable in my daily life as a parent.

What makes you happy?
Designing and making, say, a quilt – I love the creative process. But what makes me 100 times happier is watching my daughter pull out the quilt and use it for a pretend picnic with her dolls, or seeing my son bury his face into its softness. Making things, for me, is all about sharing love with others, in my small and humble way, and as cheesy as it may sound, that's what makes me happy.

What makes you sad?
That most children on earth are born into a life of poverty, violence, or oppression. I wish I were an activist to do something about it, but I'm not, and that makes me sad as well.

What can't you live without?
A hot shower in the morning, coffee, and lots of sugary goodness (what can I say, I was once a pastry chef!). Time with my family, but also time on my own to think and create.

How did you find about madeit?

I found out about the wonderful world of Made It through my friend Linda; she and her husband own a gallery where I'll be exhibiting in November (Edelweiss Gallery, beautiful local only artwork and jewellery)

Explain your style:
When it comes to jewellery I like to make a unique statement definitely involving the romantic with a touch of the contemporary. I've named most pieces after the heroines of Shakespeare; his characters encompass any and every aspect of a woman's psyche.

What makes you happy?
My Home....a little cottage in regional NSW, with my bearded hero (he beats Mr Darcy hands down any day!), our two dogs, a cat, and very soon some chooks

What makes you sad?
Cruelty caused by ignorance

What can't you live without?
Above mentioned man!

How did you find about madeit?
I've been aware of madeit for a while, through various craft and design blogs. But it wasn't until recently that I took the plunge and started a madeit shop myself!

Explain your style
I've created a collection of art prints and paper goods featuring birds, bears, bunnies and a host of cute characters, which I think are perfect for children and grownups alike. I like to create designs which are sweet and simple, with some humour thrown in for good measure.
You can see more of my scribblings on cookiebite.blogspot.com

What makes you happy?
A productive day spent creating something of value.
Family, friends, animation, music, art, and vitamin D!

What makes you sad?
That there aren't 90 hours in a day. (ooh, and 90 hours in a night in which to sleep and dream! heaven!)

What can't you live without?
air! oh, and my partner, chocolate and Mad Men, preferably in unison.

madeit new seller quick five :: elmdesign

madeit new seller quick five :: elmdesign
madeit.com.au/elmdesign

How did you find about madeit?
I found out about madeit through online shopping for interesting and handmade products. Its quite inspiring to see what other creatives are
up to!

Explain your style
My style is elegant, whimsical and a little bit crazy! I illustrate and then transfer my works onto porcelain. Its quite a process but highly rewarding as each piece has to go through 3 firing cycles in my kiln 'wonder woman'. I try to add some humour to my work, mainly my home wares range. My jewellery is more elegant I think.

What makes you happy?
My family and friends make me happy. Coming up with new ideas is always uplifting and being able to do what I love. My 2 year old daughter is the light of my life and puts a smile on my face.

What makes you sad?
The passing of my Uncle Russ last year. He was a huge influence in my life and I'm still pretty lost without him here. I miss his humour and wisdom. People that are nasty also don't go down too well.

What can't you live without?
I cant live without my kiln! Does that sound weird?! I also cant live without my family, friends, porcelain and a good cuppa.
